Jeremy A. Lazarus, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist in private practice in Denver, was elected speaker of the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates in June 2007, after serving as vice speaker since 2003. He is a past president of the Colorado Medical Society.

Dr. Lazarus currently serves as chair of the AMA Board of Trustees (BOT) Task Force on Quality, Safety and Electronic Health Records, as a member of the AMA-BOT Executive, Audit and Compensation committees, and as a board liaison to the Council on Long Range Planning and Development. He also serves as the AMA’s chief spokesperson on the uninsured.

Dr. Lazarus is a former speaker for the assembly of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and is an APA distinguished fellow. He is the author of numerous publications on ethics, economics and managed care issues. His newest book is “Entering Private Practice: A Handbook for Psychiatrists.”

Born in Chicago, Dr. Lazarus graduated from Northwestern University with a BA degree in chemistry. He received a medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine with honors in psychiatry. Following a mixed medical internship at Chicago’s Michael Reese Hospital, he became chief resident and teaching fellow at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) in Denver. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at UCHSC and voluntary associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.

Dr. Lazarus is a 13-time Ironman Triathlon finisher, 13-time marathon finisher, and a professional musician and singer. He and his wife, Debbie, director of the AMA Alliance, have three sons and six grandchildren.
