The mission of the Academy of Medicine Jacksonville, Inc., is to support charitable, scientific, and educational activities, in partnership with physicians, that benefit the community’s health.

The Academy of Medicine was established by the Duval County Medical Society in 1959 as a not-for-profit  institute  of  scientific  research and learning, dealing primarily with medical science. The Academy has had a major impact on our region's health awareness through a variety of initiatives:

  • The Jacksonville Health Education Program (JHEP)

  • The founding and development of the Borland Medical Library

  • Countywide polio and rubella inoculation programs

  • Financial and medical supply relief for international disaster victims

  • Groundbreaking radio and television programs in partnership with the DCMS

  • Community education on HIV/AIDS and substance abuse

  • Pre-participation physicals for the Police Athletic League and the Special Olympics

  • Continuing medical education for physicians

  • Forty-five years of community health studies and research on a variety of illnesses

  • Partnering with the DCMS to produce the award-winning Northeast Florida Medicine journal

  • The International Health Volunteers Organization (www.internationalhealthvolunteers.org )

The Academy founded (and originally housed) the WE CARE Program, which provided over five million dollars worth of free medical care to the homeless, working poor, underinsured and uninsured adults and children of the Jacksonville community. The program was a success, and is now managed by the Duval County Health Department.

Want to be a part of this important mission in our community? Please consider making the work of the Academy a tax-friendly part of your estate planning and charitable giving. The Academy of Medicine's Capital and Growth Campaign, along with its endowment fund, is a great way to help continue the important work of this organization. In addition, this 501 (c)(3) institute is financially responsible for operating and maintaining facilities used to conduct cultural, educational and social activities promoting medical knowledge and enlightenment. *

In the next five years the Academy will continue its current philanthropic programs, and focus special energies on the issue of evidence-based Health Outcome Disparities. The Academy of Medicine is the ideal center to bring our medical and lay community together to begin the dialogue and establish the strategies necessary to impact the more encompassing systems and societal issues that must be addressed to effect optimal health outcomes for all.
