In this issue of Jacksonville Medicine we are presenting you the proceedings of the University of Florida Annual Research Day. The proceedings are the abstracts of the research projects conducted during the last academic year at the University of Florida by our trainees as the reflection of the commitment of this institution to train young investigators. This also is an opportunity for the community physicians to become aware of the ongoing investigational work at the University of Florida, which may potentially increase the possibility of the networking and collaboration among the researchers in the community. As you will notice, the number of presentations has almost doubled this year and the quality has remained quite high.
Our sincere thanks to the judges for selecting the best poster and oral presentations: Mark DeHaven, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Community Health and Family Medicine, University of Florida Health Science Center / Jacksonville; Barry Steinberg, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.D., FACS, Chief of Service, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs, University of Florida Health Science Center / Jacksonville; James W. Kesterseon, Ph.D, D.V.M., Vice President of Product Development, SunPharm Corporation; William H. Riffee, Ph.D., Dean, College of Pharmacy, University of Florida Health Science Center / Jacksonville; and James E. Sylvester, Ph.D., Director, Cellular and Molecular Medicine Laboratory, Nemours Children's Clinic.
This year, we also initiated the "Researcher of the Year Award" to recognize a faculty member for his/her contribution to the research in our institution. Mobeen Rathore, M.D. was the recipient of this award. Dr. Rathore is a nationally recognized investigator in pediatric HIV related issues. Also special thanks to the committee of judges for selecting the researcher of the year: Ronald Rhatigan, M.D., Professor of Pathology, University of Florida Health Science Center / Jacksonville; Ann Harwood-Nuss, M.D., Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, University of Florida Health Science Center / Jacksonville; Tom Keith, Pharm.D., Chief Operating Officer, University Medical Center, and Andrea Gregg, DSN, Director, College of Nursing, University of Florida Health Science Center/Jacksonville.
As a new event, we also offered a five hour continuing medical education (CME) program entitled, "Basic and Contemporary Issues in Research" which was received with significant interest by the residents, faculty as well as the community physicians. This program will continue as an annual event as an opportunity to foster research in the greater city of Jacksonville. No registration fee is required to participate in this program.
Please be advised that because of the heterogeneity of the subjects presented in this issue of Jacksonville Medicine, no CME questions have been provided.
On a personal note, I would like to express my gratitude to the members of the Journal and Communication Committee of the Duval County Medical Society for providing an opportunity to share with you the product of our efforts, of which we are very proud.
