University of Florida Health Science Center/Jacksonville Celebrates 4th Annual Research Day

Elvia S. Williams, Public Relations Specialist, University Medical Center

Residents, fellows and graduate students were among the crowd gathered at the University of Florida Health Science Center/Jacksonville on June 5th to participate in the Fourth Annual Research Day. Initially, Research Day originated to support and promote research participation between the University of Florida campuses in Jacksonville and Gainesville. The event has since grown to include participants from other local health care institutions as well.

"In the last few years, there has been a remarkable emphasis in the integration of scientific research into the postgraduate training programs throughout the nation. It has now become increasingly obvious that it is no longer sufficient to only demonstrate an interest in research within a department. In order to survive and maintain credibility, it is now necessary for a training program to present a well orchestrated research plan for the entire department and to incorporate active participation of residents, fellows and graduate students in investigational work," said Shahla Masood, M.D., Assistant Dean for Research, University of Florida. She also gave a report on the progress of research at the University of Florida Health Science Center/Jacksonville and announced the opening of the University of Florida Center for Clinical Research, which will officially start its function July 1, 1998. The center will enhance the collaboration between the faculty investigators and the industry at the local, regional and national level.

The guest speaker for Research Day was John V. Lombardi, Ph.D., President, University of Florida. Lombardi spoke to a standing room only crowd on "The Research Mission in a Competitive World." An an extremely engaging speaker, Dr. Lombardi emphasized the importance of research in medicine.
