Every 15 seconds a women is kicked, slapped or worse. Unfortunately, in many of the homes where such violent acts occur, there are small children who witness the violence and may be victims as well.

This issue of Jacksonville Medicine is dedicated to a continuing problem in our society, domestic violence. Physicians and other health care providers are in a position to identify victims of domestic violence and provide resources for assistance to the victims. Our offices may be the first opportunity for intervention for these victims. Health care providers in Florida are required to learn about domestic violence as a licensure requirement. This issue meets that educational requirement for physicians and physician assistants.

We have a series of articles that address the many aspects of domestic violence; from the primary care physician's role, including obstetricians, to the issue of child abuse. Included with the issue is a supplement, which is a Resource Guide, prepared by the Mayor's Domestic Violence Task Force. This is an excellent resource, which should be kept in your office for immediate accessibility and use.

Domestic violence negatively affects our families, our children and our society. Medical costs escalate because of injuries from violence in the home, and businesses suffer financial as well as productivity losses because of this unacceptable behavior. Educate yourself about domestic violence and help to BREAK THE CYCLE.
