Feature Articles: Emergency MedicineGuest Editor's Note:David J. Vukich, M.D. |
| This edition presents a broad picture of the relatively new
specialty of emergency medicine. Although there has been a great deal of interest in this
fast-paced specialty from the entertainment industry as well as the news media, it is not
well understood by lay people nor many of our colleagues. In the first article I review the rapid evolution of emergency medicine, the current manpower needs for the specialty and its financial impact. I also describe the local academic development of the specialty to its full department status within the University of Florida College of Medicine. This introduction is followed by two clinical articles focusing on unique aspects of emergency medicine. In the first, Dr. Andy Godwin describes the use of ultrasound in the Emergency Department performed by emergency physicians for screening patients with selected problems. As ultrasound proliferates through the various specialties it is proving extremely useful for emergency physicians, convenient and fast for our patients, and cost effective for hospital administrators. In the next article, Dr. Tom Bozzuto describes the most frequently encountered uses of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in emergencies. Once considered valuable in only a few situations, there is now a large body of scientific information supporting hyperbarics for several diagnoses. And, for emergency medicine, it is the primary treatment for several serious problems. These clinical articles are followed by a review of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, the product of the two primary specialties which pioneered emergency services for children. Dr. Phyllis Stenklyft describes the special clinical considerations, accomplishments and organization of this new subspecialty. Finally, Dr. John Stimler, one of the most experienced emergency physicians in Jacksonville, describes the clinical and business aspects of the specialty. Issues of cost, service, overhead and the impact of access to care laws are discussed. Jacksonville Medicine / March, 1999What's New
