| It is a distinct honor and pleasure to be the Guest Editor
for this edition of the Jacksonville Medicine issue on Dementia. When Alzheimer described his disease in 1907 life expectancy was 45 years. This has changed dramatically and now we expect 50% of individuals to live past 75 years. Dementia is an age dependent group of diseases so that the longer the population lives, the more dementia patients there will be. In fact there are estimated to be 4,000,000 persons in the USA with Alzheimer's disease and the cost to the country is about 1 billion dollars per year.
