It is a distinct honor and pleasure to be the Guest Editor for this edition of the Jacksonville Medicine issue on Dementia.

When Alzheimer described his disease in 1907 life expectancy was 45 years. This has changed dramatically and now we expect 50% of individuals to live past 75 years. Dementia is an age dependent group of diseases so that the longer the population lives, the more dementia patients there will be. In fact there are estimated to be 4,000,000 persons in the USA with Alzheimer's disease and the cost to the country is about 1 billion dollars per year.

In this set of articles we have included:

  • Current information of Alzheimer's disease;
  • Facts about Lewy Body Dementia which is probably the second most common cause of dementia;
  • Vascular factors in dementia which may play an important role in Alzheimer's disease as well as cause dementia in their own right;
  • Frontal dementia in which there has been important progress because certain gene mutations on the tau protein gene are now known to cause a percentage of these cases; and
  • Methods to help the family deal with difficult management issues

We hope that the readership will enjoy these articles and find the information useful and practical .
