Associate Editor's Note

Once again, the University of Florida Health Science Center at Jacksonville celebrated the scholar activity of the residents, fellows and faculty of this institution at Research Day.

During the past six years, Research Day has grown from the seed of a bold idea into a recognized scientific event. Research Day has indeed provided an opportunity for the exchange of exciting ideas and fostering the spirit of collaboration and networking among young investigators. It has also served to fulfill the requirements established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for training institutions.

In the last several years, training in research has become an integral part of graduate medical education. The academic institutions have gradually become more aware of the necessity of the creation of an infrastructure, which can provide a stimulating environment for a trainee to participate in meaningful investigational work.

This is not an easy task and requires a dynamic educational environment, committed faculty and adequate financial resources. But more importantly, it requires vision and serious leadership. Research is a serious business and only those who truly understand the process and have crossed this path should be given the privilege of teaching it.

We are fortunate that at the University of Florida, we have many qualified mentors to carry out this task. Similarly, the value of research is well recognized among the Jacksonville community and the Duval County Medical Society.

In the past few years, the members of the Journal and Communication Committee of the Duval County Medical Society have graciously agreed to publish the proceedings of the University of Florida Research Day in a special issue of Jacksonville Medicine. This is exciting and we owe them many thanks.
