Celebrates Sixth Annual Research Day

In the spirit of academic and scientific collaboration, Faculty, Fellows, Residents, Graduate Students, and Undergraduate Students at the University of Florida Health Science Center / Jacksonville (UFHSC/J) participated in Research Day on Wednesday, May 24, 2000. Research Day is designed to recognize the scholarly activities of these investigators and showcase campus wide research activities during the past year. Research Day 2000 included selected platform presentations and poster viewing, guest speakers discussing research related topics and presentations from each of the 1999 Researcher of the Year awardeess. Niranjan Kissoon, M.D., Professor and Chief, Division of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, and M. Peter Pevonka, M.S., R.PH, Senior Associate Dean for Research, College of Medicine, University of Florida served as moderators for the day.

Winfred Phillips, Ph.D., Vice President of Research, University of Florida Office of Research, Technology, and Graduate Education was the guest speaker for this event. Dr. Phillips' presented "Research and the Research University", which was well received.

A special award presented to Shahla Masood, M.D. also highlighted the day. The award, a collage representing some of her professional work and achievements, was presented to her for dedicated commitment and numerous contributions to research efforts on the University of Florida Health Science Center / Jacksonville campus.

A total of 27 posters and 6 oral platform presentations from residents and fellows were judged by a multi-disciplinary panel consisting of:

  • Scott Silliman, M.D.; Assistant Professor; Director, Comprehensive Stroke Program; Department of Neurology
  • Barry Steinberg, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.D., F.A.C.S.; Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs; Director, Lorenz Center for Pediatric Facial Disorders; Chief, Department of Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Victoria Timmons, Pharm.D.; Clinical Assistant Professor; Director, Department of Pharmacy

New to Research Day 2000, was a faculty section for poster presentations. This proved to be a great opportunity to showcase research projects completed by campus faculty over the past year. In addition, the research efforts of Andrew Kaunitz, M.D., were recognized with the Researcher of the Year Award.
