“Photography is still in my blood,” says Don Messer (87), who took the “Azalea Bouquet” cover photo. A retired photographer, Don still dabbles in photography. He uses his computer to produce digital prints of his photos and those of others. Don even shares photography tips with his cardiologist and DCMS member, William Wainwright, MD, who is also a part-time photographer.

At one time, Don’s whole life revolved around cameras and film. Starting in 1940, he took yearbook photos then moved to portraiture, groups, weddings and aerial shots. While in the Army Air Corp during World War II, he took photos of cadets and student officers. After working 20 years for himself, Don became a photo technician for Shell Development Company in Houston, TX. He worked for Shell’s geologists who needed photographs of rocks, geological formations and oil shale as illustrations for reports or research projects.
