Jacksonville—The Florida Department of Health in Duval County (DOH-Duval), Department of Children and Families and the Healthy Start Coalition are pleased to announce they will be hosting Healthy Babies – A Community Conversation: Infant Mortality and Health Equity in support of Florida Healthy Babies, a statewide collaborative initiative developed to influence and reduce racial differences in infant deaths. The meeting will take place on June 30, 2016, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., at Edward Waters College Milne Auditorium.

In 2014 Duval County’s infant mortality rate was 8.8 per 1,000 births compared to 6.0 for Florida. During the same year, the infant mortality rate for African Americans in Duval County (15.0 per 1,000 births) was nearly three-times higher than whites (4.7).

“The public must participate in developing solutions for the health disparities that are plaguing our community,” said DOH-Duval Director Kelli Wells, MD.  “Our goal is to start the conversation that leads to the creation of programs and policies to improve social conditions and public health outcomes.”

Promoting health equity is a priority for the Florida Department of Health. Infant mortality rates are a measure of health of a community. Disparities in this area highlight the need to focus on equity as we work to solve these problems.

The Florida Department of Health recently invested $1.4 million in the Florida Healthy Babies Initiative, which is an effort of the department’s Health Equity Program Council. Part of this funding went to all 67 local health departments to support community workgroups in developing results focused interventions to reduce racial disparities in infant mortality.

During the meeting participants will have the opportunity to review infant death data, discuss racial differences in infant mortality, and create an action plan to improve local infant health outcomes.
