Glaucoma is caused by high pressure within the eye. It’s the second leading cause of blindness in the United States, and the leading cause among African-Americans.
Early in its course, when it’s most treatable, glaucoma is painless and has no symptoms. Only late in the course of the disease, when it is less treatable and more aggressive, do patients begin to notice worsening vision. Because any vision lost to glaucoma can never be recovered, it’s important to catch it and begin treatment early.
