Red Flag Issue Escalates - Deadline Looming

Organized medicine continues to express strong opposition to applying "red flags" rule to physicians and recently received a response from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding this matter.  The rules require creditors—broadly interpreted by FTC staff to include physicians who accept payment after a rendered service—to establish programs that can detect, prevent and mitigate medical identity theft.  Despite this opposition and even delay of the regulation to May 1 from last fall, the FTC continues to assert that physicians who regularly bill their patients for services rendered, including co-payments and coinsurance, are considered creditors and must develop and implement written identity theft prevention programs for their practices by May 1 to be in compliance with the "red flags" rule. Read the FTC’s response to the American Medical Association’s concerns. Educational pieces are being developed for physicians and seminars planned to provide guidance to physicians on this matter.

DCMS Website Launches Redesign

The DCMS website (www.dcmsonline.org) has been restructured and redesigned, and hopefully it will be easier to find what you are seeking.  It is still a work in progress and coming soon we will offer search capabilities and an online database of physician members.  Take a look around and let us know what you think.  On the DCMS in the Community page, we would like to include a listing of physicians involved in local healthcare organizations.  If you are involved with a community health organization representing the medical profession, email Marigrace Doran, at mdoran@dcmsonline.org, with the particulars.

2009 Florida Legislative Session

The 2009 Florida Legislative Session began March 3, 2009!  In cooperation with the FMA, DCMS staff and legislative committee members continue to monitor pertinent healthcare legislation.    Visit the legislative page on our website for relevant links and legislative contact information.

FPIC Files for 5.53% Rate Reduction
