Legislative Update

The FMA's managed care bill, SB 1012, cleared its second hurdle in the Senate last Tuesday.  The Senate Commerce Committee  passed the bill out on a 9-0 vote.  The bill most likely will be up in the Senate Health Regulation Committee next week.  For a summary of the FMA’s managed care bill, click here. The DCMS will keep you informed of this and other legislative issues as the need arises. If you have any questions or concerns about legislative issues, contact Jay Millson via email or phone 355-6561 ext. 105.

Unnatural Causes – PBS series and local iniative

Unnatural Causes… is a nation-wide campaign to raise awareness about how the social circumstances in which we are born, live and work can get under our skin and disrupt our biology as surely as germs and viruses.  The upcoming four-part documentary series airs on WJCT on March 27, April 3, April 10 and April 17 at 10:00 PM. Jacksonville is one of more than 100 communities throughout the nation that will partner with a new national campaign entitled “Unnatural Causes”.. For a downloadable poster, click here, or visit the Duval County Health Department’s website for more information on the local campaign.

Dyslexia Conference in Jacksonville, April 6-7

The International Dyslexia Association will hold a conference, Rx for Reading:  What Medicine, Science, and Education Prescribe for Reading Success in Jacksonville at the Omni Jacksonville Hotel on Sunday, April 6, 2008, and Monday, April 7, 2008. This conference is a wonderful opportunity for physicians to add to their store of medical and scientific knowledge about dyslexia, a condition that affects 1 in every 5 of their patients. The program includes a free teacher, parent and teen seminar, and an optional field trip to view actual dyslexia screening through the Nemours Bright Start Dyslexia Initiative. More information, and registration materials, are available at www.idafla.org.

Physician & Spouse Survey Assistance Requested

Your assistance is needed with a doctoral student project that has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of physicians' relationships at home.  This collaborative investigation, between the University of South Florida's College of Medicine and Department of Psychology, involves an online research study focusing on the role that stress and social support play in the lives of physicians and their spouses/partners. To thank you for participating in this study, a monetary donation to a charity of your choosing will be made by the study coordinators. To be eligible to participate you must be married or living permanently with your partner. You and your spouse/partner will be asked to complete two very brief surveys (approximately 7 minutes each) one now and one in several months. If you are willing to participate, please click on the link below: http://hsccm2.hsc.usf.edu/us3/Surveys/TakeSurvey.aspx?surveyid=1587
