Four new cases of the Zika virus have been reported in Florida, with one involving a pregnant woman, according to information posted Wednesday on the state Department of Health website. The updated numbers brought the state's overall total to 1,044 cases of the mosquito-borne virus. Two of the newly reported cases involved local transmissions in Miami-Dade County, an area that has been a key focus of the state's efforts to combat Zika. The other two cases were "travel related," meaning they involve people who were infected elsewhere and brought the virus into the state. One of the new travel-related cases was in Sarasota County, while the other involved a pregnant woman. The state does not detail the locations of cases involving pregnant women. Zika is particularly dangerous to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects. In all, Florida has reported 110 infections involving pregnant women, according to the Department of Health numbers.
