Event Summary:

The opioid epidemic affects the entire United States. During this lecture, Dr. Pomm will review the most up-to-date local, state, and national data as it pertains to the opioid epidemic. He’ll provide a brief review of opioid pharmacology and the available pharmacologic tools will be discussed. In addition, a city-wide effort in Jacksonville, FL, called Project Save Lives (PSL), will be analyzed, from inception, as to its policies and procedures, problems uncovered, and evolution. Dr. Pomm will present the most recent PSL data and its actual impact on this epidemic will be reviewed. From this discussion, he will reveal the many insights uncovered through the growth of PSL and the multiple challenges that we now face in our attempts to combat the opioid epidemic. Lastly, Dr. Pomm will discuss the expansion of PSL, and the comprehensive role Lakeview Health and other treatment providers will have in the creation of a nationally unique citywide network being created as one of the next steps taken while we try to get ahead of this latest manifestation of the disease of addiction.

Objectives:

·         The audience will become familiar with the latest data regarding the opioid epidemic.

·         The audience will establish a knowledge-base regarding the pharmacology of opioids as well as the pharmacologic tools available to combat this epidemic.

·         The audience will develop an understanding of our local effort in combatting this epidemic, the lessons learned, its evolution and the steps toward its expansion.
