Amid a long-running legislative debate about boosting the use of telemedicine, a non-profit group said Thursday it has received a federal grant to help set up telemedicine programs in rural North Florida. The Florida Partnership for TeleHealth said it wants to use the $100,000 grant from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration to establish telemedicine clinics in rural communities near Tallahassee. It said many patients go from those communities to emergency rooms for routine and non-emergency care. Broadly, telemedicine involves using the Internet and other technology to provide health care remotely. Supporters say, for example, that it can be used by physicians at major hospitals to treat patients in rural areas. While some providers, including hospitals, already use telemedicine, lawmakers have looked at addressing issues such as standards of care. But the House and Senate have not been able to reach agreement the past two years.
