Yesterday, Duval County Medical Society Past-president Dr. Floyd Willis was on hand at Edward Waters College to help announce a one-of-a-kind program he’s helped to launch right here in Jacksonville. The program, called the Health-Smart Church Center (HSCC), will provide health empowerment through coaches and education at six local black churches.

It’s an 18-month program designed at helping 30 overweight individuals at each of the churches improve their weight and overall health. Dr. Willis, who represents the Mayo Clinic in this program, joins Dr. Carolyn Tucker (University of Florida) and Dr. Penny Ralston (Florida St. University) as the principal investigators. The program was made possible by a grant from the Humana Foundation.
