Raise Awareness about heart disease and stroke in women

Heidi Moore

JACKSONVILLE —The Florida Department of Health in Duval County (DOH-Duval) is encouraging everyone to wear red on Friday, February 3 to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke, the #1 killer of women in the United States. It impacts mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts and friends.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every four female deaths can be attributed to cardiovascular complications, including heart disease and strokes. In Duval County, heart disease is the second leading cause of death in females.

Education, healthier lifestyles and awareness can help reduce these numbers. Risk factors for developing heart disease include: high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, smoking and obesity. If you are at risk, talk to your doctor. Take action. Don’t smoke. Eat a healthy diet. Get physically active. Maintain a healthy weight. Take medicine that is prescribed according to your doctor’s instructions.

Wear Red for Women and show your commitment to reducing risk, improving health, and saving women’s lives. To find out more about women and heart disease, visit the Wear Red for Women website for more information.
